Report Launch – Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence in Cambodia
4 February @ 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM BMT
The growing use of internet-powered tools for advocacy by women has been accompanied by a rise in technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV), particularly targeting women with high visibility in the public sphere. In Cambodia, the experiences of women such as human rights defenders, Indigenous leaders, journalists, and civil society organisation leaders remain undocumented despite the severity of the issue. The report Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence and the Impact on the Civic Freedoms of Women Journalists and Human Rights Defenders in Cambodia fills this gap by drawing on desk research and interviews with 12 women representatives from these groups.
The report argues that the persistence of TFGBV is rooted in patriarchal social structures and a flawed ecosystem of judicial, legal, and defence mechanisms, which collectively sustain and amplify this issue. As a result, TFGBV has become a form of harassment that reinforces existing gender-based violence, disproportionately affecting high-profile women engaged in advocacy.
Upon completion of the research, its key findings will be presented in a report launch where key stakeholders will be invited to participate. This session will be a key step in this project not only to raise awareness and share insightful information but also to discuss and identify the next steps to start addressing this issue.
